AP Biology enzyme cataylst lab report Sample Essay Example

AP Biology enzyme cataylst lab report Sample Paper AP Biology enzyme cataylst lab report Essay Introduction The purpose of activity C is o determine the rate at which H2O spontaneously decomposes when exposed to room temperatures and ambient light for 24 hours. The purpose of activity D is to determine the rate at which catalane decomposes H2O. After adding HOSTS for different time lashes, etc. , the resulting data will be graphed at which the catalane decomposed by catalane. Background: The four different activities to the enzyme catalyst lab have similar but different backgrounds. Activity Ass background is to investigate the specific reaction of the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide by the enzyme, catalane. Hydrogen Peroxide decomposes lowly into water and oxygen, and the addition of catalane lowers the activation energy of the reaction until it proceeds to a room temperature. The catalane will is unchanged and is usable for to catalyst the reaction of more hydrogen peroxide. The background of activities A, B, and C is to determine the concentration of H2O in a solution. To do this, th e concentration of an unknown will be used, such as a solution of 0. 1 N, which is normal. When titration is done, 5 ml of acid will go in a beaker. When pH indicator paper is added, the paper will turn yellow if it is an acid and green if the solution is neutral. AP Biology enzyme cataylst lab report Essay Body Paragraphs This is the endpoint of titration. In the activities, 2% potassium permanganate will be used to titrate H2O. When the H2O reacts with the potassium permanganate, which is dark purple, the solution will become persistent or neutral pink or pale light brown. This ends the titration for the part. Materials: Four H2O in labeled cup Three HOSTS in labeled cup Catalane on ice Three Km Unlabeled 60 ml cup Test tubes Test tube holders Test tube racks Four syringe labeled H2O Transfer pipettes Glass rods Scalpels Potato Cube Hot plate Cup labeled Baseline Two Cup labeled titration Syringe labeled HOSTS Syringe labeled transfer Titration syringe Distilled water in cup labeled 20th Cup labeled unconcealed decomposition Cup labeled H2O overnight Cups labeled respectively 10 sec, 30 sec, 60 sec, 120 sec, and 180 sec. Procedure: Activity A 1 . With the syringe labeled H2O and transfer 10 ml of H2O into the unlabeled 60 ml cup. Add 1 ml of catalane to the unlabeled cup. Observe. 2. With a transfer pipette, transfer 5 ml of catalane to a test tube. Place the test in water filled beaker on the hot plate, and let it boil. 3. Transfer 10 ml of H2O into clean cup. Add 1 ml of catalane to the cup. Observe. Wash out beaker. Cut a potato cube about LLC on the sides. Place the cube in an unlabeled cup and crush with a glass rod. Don’t use too much force as the rod will break. Activity B 1. Use H2O syringe and put 10 ml of H2O in 60 ml cup labeled baseline. 2. Add 1 ml of distilled water from 20th cup to baseline cup with transfer pipette. 3. Use H2O syringe and add 10 ml of 1 M HOSTS from HOSTS cup to baseline cup. 4. Mix contents of baseline cup by swirling the cup. 5. Use 5 ml syringe labeled transfer and remove 5 ml of baseline cup solution and put it in the cup labeled titration. Rinse the syringe afterwards. Titrate the 5 ml sample to determine the baseline amount of H2O. Activity C 1 . Use H2O syringe and transfer 10 ml of H2O from the H2O overnight cup to the 60 ml cup l abeled unconcealed decomposition. 2. With the transfer pipette, add 1 ml of distilled water from the 20th cup to the unconcealed decomposition cup. 3. With the 10 ml syringe labeled HOSTS, add 10 ml of M HOSTS from HOSTS cup to the unconcealed decomposition. 4. Swirl the unconcealed decomposition cup to mix the contents. 5. With the 5 ml syringe labeled transfer, remove 5 ml of the reaction mixture and put it in the titration cup. Rinse the transfer syringe. 6. Titrate the sample to determine the amount of H2O left in the solution after 24 hours. Activity D 1. Line up the 60 ml cups with the labels 10 sec; 30 sec, 60 sec, 120 sec, and 180 sec. Use the H2O syringe and add 10 ml of H2O to each cup. 2. Before starting each test, pressure 10 ml of HOSTS in the HOSTS syringe, so the reaction can be stopped right away. 3. One person should add the reagents while another person keeps time. 4. For the 10 second time trial. With the transfer pipette, add 1 ml of catalane extract to the 10 se c cup. Right after hat, swirl the cup to mix the contents. The reaction will take place after adding catalane. At 10 seconds, add the HOSTS to the cup. 5. Repeat with 30 sec, 60 sec, 120 sec, and 180 sec. Data/Results: Activity A results Testing for enzyme activity – The reaction was an enzymatic reaction because the chemicals and substances reacted. There was fizzing and bubbling after the reaction. Right when the chemical was added to the solution, the solution started fizzing right away. After about 5 seconds, small bubbles started forming, and they all moved towards the center of the cup. As a result, one big bubble formed hen they came together, and when the bubble got too big, it popped and the process would repeat over again. The effect of boiling on enzyme activity – The reaction when the catalane was boiled, had the same results as the testing for enzyme activity results. The solution still boiled and formed bubbles, as well as the process of the small bubbles joining together. The only difference was that the reaction time was slower. This would repeat over and over slower than at room temperature. Testing for catalane in living tissue – For the last procedure of activity a, we had to find out whether living tissue would react to catalane, such s a potato. We mashed up the potato with the glass rod, and we added H2O for the reaction. According to observations, the only thing that happened was that bubbles formed and the potato got soggy after 24 hours in the catalane. Activity B Initial Volume Final Volume 1 ml A Volume 4 ml In activity b, we composed a baseline that held H2O, H2O, and 1 M HOSTS. We swirled the contents to mix them together. With the 5 ml syringe labeled transfer, we removed 5 ml of the baseline solution put it in the cup labeled titration. After that, we titrated the solution to determine the baseline amount of H2O. The solution turned a brown color when we added Km to titrate it. The initial volume was 5 ml, th e final volume is 1 ml, and the change is 4 ml. Activity c 5 ml 0. 6 ml 4. 4 ml In activity c, we made unconcealed decomposition with H2O, 20th, and 1 M HOSTS. During this part, we had to take the 5 ml syringe labeled transfer and remove 5 ml of the mixture and put it in the titration cup. We titrated the sample by adding 5 ml of Km to determine the amount of H2O left in the solution after 24 hours. The titration turned brown and over a 24 hour time period it remained the same color when exposed to oxygen. Activity D 10 sec 30 sec 60 sec 120 sec sec 3. 1 ml 6 ml 2 ml 18 ml 2. 8 ml 2. Ml 3. 4 ml 3 ml 3. 2 ml 2. 2 ml . 2 ml 2. 6 ml H2O decomposed 0. 018 ml 0. 2 ml 0. 81 ml 2. 81 ml . 41 ml In activity d, we did time trials of how fast H2O decomposes to exposure of catalane. We gathered all the cups so we could have them ready for each time trial. For 10 seconds, we pre-filled the HOSTS syringe, so it would be ready right at 10 seconds. We added 1 ml of catalane to the 10 second cup, a nd above are the results. Lab Questions: 1 . Changes that I observed that indicates a chemical change was occurring were hat I observed fizzing and bubbles, so the solution is chemically changing due to a reaction. . The balanced equation for the reaction is E+S t] SEES 0 E+P 3. A. Substrate: S B. Enzyme: E C. Intermediate complex that formed: SEES D. Products: P 1. Procedure – 2. Boiling decreases the activity because Hydrogen bonds absorb excess heat and break the bonds. The enzyme will lose its structure and therefore its ability to bind to its substrate, this is called denomination. 3. Three factors that would affect the activity of catalane are temperature, pH, and concentration. Overall, all three of these will slow down catalane activity. The temperature for catalane is 37 degrees Celsius, which his human body temperature, and changing the nature would just nature the catalane. Analysis of Results 1 . It is necessary to determine a baseline for H2O because the baseline is the controlled variable. Without the baseline, observations and recordings can’t be made. 2. The addition of HOSTS stops the reaction because HOSTS, or sulfuric acid, denatures the enzyme. Therefore the shape of the active site changes and it no longer matches the substrate, making it a different substance. 3. Pig. 5 | the dependent variable is the decomposed H2O and the independent arable is the times. 10 seconds, 30 seconds, 60 seconds, 120 seconds, and 180 seconds) 4. The line on my graph represents the data on table 3. It shows that at 10 seconds, . 018 ml of H2O was decomposed. For 30 seconds, . 20 ml was decomposed, etc. 5. The graph of table 3 shows the rate over time, and it is not fairly constant at all. From 60 to 1 20 seconds the decomposing rate was about 2 ml, but the 120 to 180 seconds decreases by 2. 6. On lab packet. 7. The initial rate of the catalane is approximately . 0649 ml/seconds. Conclusion: The enzyme catalyst lab’s purpose was to investiga te enzyme reactions when exposed to different things. In this lab, we put in catalane in a cup with H2O and observed, we boiled it, and we used live tissue, such as a potato. We also made mixtures and titrated them to see the amount of H2O in a solution after titration. Evermore, we did timed reactions to see the decomposing rate of the enzymes. In activity A, when we added the catalane to the H2O, bubbles started to form and there was slight fizz. The purpose of this lab is to see whether enzymatic reactions will take place on some substances and/or in certain states, such as boiling water and live potato tissue. The bubbles got smaller, and they moved into the center. As for the boiling substance, it was the same, but the process was slower. I conclude that this occurred because the solution was changing state when it boils, so the particles move faster causing a slower reaction. In activity B and C we titrated the solutions, but they were slightly different. The point in this lab was to find out the baseline amount of H2O after titration. For activity B, we titrated a baseline consisting of H2O, HOSTS, and 20th. For activity C we did the same thing but we made unconcealed decomposition. Geography of the Ganges River

Geography of the Ganges River The Ganges River, also called Ganga, is a river located in northern India that flows toward the border with Bangladesh (map). It is the longest river in India and flows for around 1,569 miles (2,525 km) from the Himalayan Mountains to the Bay of Bengal. The river has the second greatest water discharge in the world, and its basin is the most heavily populated in the world with over 400 million people living in the basin. The Ganges River is extremely important to the people of India as most of the people living on its banks use it for daily needs such as bathing and fishing. It is also significant to Hindus as they consider it their most sacred river. The Course of the Ganges River The headwaters of the Ganges River begin high in the Himalayan Mountains where the Bhagirathi River flows out of the Gangotri Glacier in Indias Uttarakhand state. The glacier sits at an elevation of 12,769 feet (3,892 m). The Ganges River proper begins farther downstream where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers join. As the Ganges flows out of the Himalayas, it creates a narrow, rugged canyon. The Ganges River emerges from the Himalayas at the town of Rishikesh where it begins to flow onto the Indo-Gangetic Plain. This area, also called the North Indian River Plain, is a very large, relatively flat, fertile plain that makes up most of the northern and eastern parts of India as well as parts of Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh. In addition to entering the Indo-Gangetic Plain in this area, part of the Ganges River is also diverted toward the Ganges Canal for irrigation in the Uttar Pradesh state. As the Ganges River then flows farther downstream, it changes its direction several times and is joined by many other tributary rivers such as the Ramganga, Tamsa, and Gandaki rivers to name a few. There are also several cities and towns that the Ganges River passes through on its way downstream. Some of these include Chunar, Kolkata, Mirzapur, and Varanasi. Many Hindus visit the Ganges River in Varanasi as that city is considered the holiest of cities. As such, the citys culture is also closely tied into the river as it is the most sacred river in Hinduism. Once the Ganges River flows out of India and into Bangladesh, its main branch is known as the Padma River. The Padma River is joined downstream by large rivers like the Jamuna and Meghna rivers. After joining the Meghna, it takes on that name before flowing into the Bay of Bengal. Before entering the Bay of Bengal however, the river creates the worlds largest delta, Ganges Delta. This region is a highly fertile sediment-laden area that covers 23,000 square miles (59,000 sq km). It should be noted that the course of the Ganges River described in the above paragraphs is a general description of the rivers route from its source where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers join to its outlet at the Bay of Bengal. The Ganges has very complicated hydrology, and there are several different descriptions of its overall length and the size of its drainage basin based on what tributary rivers are included. The most widely accepted length of the Ganges River is 1,569 miles (2,525 km), and its drainage basin is estimated to be about 416,990 square miles (1,080,000 sq km). The Population of the Ganges River The Ganges River basin has been inhabited by humans since ancient times. The first people in the region were of the Harappan civilization. They moved into the Ganges River basin from the Indus River basin around the 2nd millennium B.C.E. Later the Gangetic Plain became the center of the Maurya Empire and then the Mughal Empire. The first European to discuss the Ganges River was Megasthenes in his work Indica. In modern times the Ganges River has become a source of life for the nearly 400 million people living in its basin. They rely on the river for their daily needs such as drinking water supplies and food and for irrigation and manufacturing. Today the Ganges River basin is the most populated river basin in the world. It has a population density of about 1,000 people per square mile (390 per sq km). The Significance of the Ganges River Aside from providing drinking water and irrigating fields, the Ganges River is extremely important to Indias Hindu population for religious reasons as well. The Ganges River is considered their most sacred river, and it is worshiped as the goddess Ganga Ma or Mother Ganges.   According to the Myth of the Ganges, the goddess Ganga descended from heaven to dwell in the waters of the Ganges River to protect, purify and bring to heaven those who touch it. Devout Hindus visit the river daily to offer flowers and food to Ganga. They also drink the water and bathe in the river to cleanse and purify their sins. Also, Hindus believe that upon death the waters of the Ganges River are needed to reach the World of the Ancestors, Pitriloka. As a result, Hindus bring their dead to the river for cremation along its banks and afterward their ashes are spread in the river. In some cases, corpses are also thrown into the river. The city of Varanasi is the holiest of cities along the Ganges River and many Hindus travel there place ashes of their dead in the river. Along with daily baths in the Ganges River and offerings to the goddess Ganga there are large religious festivals that occur in the river throughout the year where millions of people travel to the river to bathe so that they can be purified of their sins. Pollution of the Ganges River Despite the religious significance and daily importance of the Ganges River for the people of India, it is one of the most polluted rivers in the world. Pollution of the Ganges is caused by both human and industrial waste due to Indias rapid growth as well as religious events. India currently has a population of over one billion people, and 400 million of them live in the Ganges River basin. As a result, much of their waste, including raw sewage is dumped into the river. Also, many people bathe and use the river to clean their laundry. Fecal coliform bacteria levels near Varanasi are at least 3,000 times higher than the what is established by the World Health Organization as safe (Hammer, 2007). Industrial practices in India also have little regulation and as the population grows these industries do as well. There are many tanneries, chemical plants, textile mills, distilleries and slaughterhouses along the river and many of them dump their untreated and often toxic waste into the river. The water of the Ganges has been tested to contain high levels of things like chromium sulfate, arsenic, cadmium, mercury and sulfuric acid (Hammer, 2007). In addition to human and industrial waste, some religious activities also increase the pollution of the Ganges. For example, Hindus believe that they must take offerings of food and other items to Ganga and as a result, these items are thrown into the river on a regular basis and more so during religious events. Human remains are also often placed into the river. In the late 1980s Indias prime minister, Rajiv Gandhi began the Ganga Action Plan (GAP) to clean up the Ganges River. The plan shut down many highly polluting industrial plants along the river, and allotted funding for the construction of wastewater treatment facilities but its efforts have fallen short as the plants are not large enough to handle the waste coming from such a large population (Hammer, 2007). Many of the polluting industrial plants are also continuing to dump their hazardous waste into the river. Despite this pollution, however, the Ganges River remains important to the Indian people as well as different species of plants and animals such as the Ganges River dolphin, a very rare species of freshwater dolphin that is native only to that area. To learn more about the Ganges River, read A Prayer for the Ganges from Smithsonian.com.

Comparing & Contrasting Authorities Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Comparing & Contrasting Authorities - Essay Example The "Boy with a Pipe" has been one of the most 'talked about' & heavily debated works of art between late 2004 & 2005. This has been the case owing to the fact that this particular painting holds the world record of being the most expensive painting ever to have been sold through an auction at a staggering price of $104.2 million (US dollars). The authors of these three articles have expressed their opinion on the pricing of this specific piece of art and have done so by citing & comparing the painting with other pieces of art that command similar attention in the art world. My argument on this particular discussion is that the price of an art piece is not in direct relation to the quality and fame attached to it. I have chosen the first article because I find it to be a fair report of the incident. It simply reports the price of the painting (Boy with a Pipe) and provides an insight into the brief history of artwork being sold through auctions. In the second article, the author strongly concludes that the society is spending money crazily in an effort to buy these pieces of artwork and investing money into this domain right from the beginning. In fact, the author for this second article has included as many as twelve quotes from professionals of artwork in an effort to provide support to his point of view. It is evident that the author is obviously trying hard to influence his audiences in an effort to make them agree with his point of view that stresses that there is a major trend that the society is now investing in arts for money. I have found myself to have a sense of understanding with the author of the third article and in fact, this is what my argument has really been about. My opinion is that the price of an artwork is very dependent on the nature of the buyer. After all, a piece of art will remain a piece of art no matter whether a person likes a piece of art and would like to keep it to him/herself. If a person is rich and can afford to pay millions of dollars in order to buy it, then one could say that's how much it's worth. The hard truth is that a person who really appreciates art would not consider as an avenue of investment. In Sotheby's, the author compares the price of the Picasso painting with the most expensive piece of artwork by Van Gogh. He has simply reported this as a piece of fact. The story from Investment News has mentioned about the staggering price of the Picasso painting. The author has an opinion that it seems to be a trend among people, especially the rich, who regard works of

Airport Security Essay Example for Free

Airport Security Essay The department of homeland security has spent $40 billion rebuilding the aviation security system since September 11, 2001. Since then airport security has changed drastically, changed the whole world’s attitude towards airport security. The terrorist attack also showed the entire world how easily the old system was to manipulate and how much improvement airports need before they can truly be considered secure. The attacks forced the airline industry to renew and strengthen their focus on security. Many airports in the U.S. have introduced ethnic profiling since September 11, 2001 and the evidence shows this method has helped improve airport security. â€Å"The suspects who have since 9/11/01 been picked up are at least mostly Arabs† (Gale â€Å"Airport Security.† Opposing Viewpoints Online Collection). Security checks are not intended to embarrass or harm anybody; they are a necessary precaution to protect all passengers including Muslims. Not only does the TSA keep an eye on airline security around the globe, but also they have many different layers of security in our nation’s airports. The newest and most controversially is the full body scanner. These x-ray machines strip a person down to their birthday suit. Airport screeners are now federal employees. People are now having to wait longer to be able to pass thru security line to check in. many travelers get pulled aside for full body searches. There are 40 active full body scanners at 19 different airports, by the end of the year officials would like 500 in place. Today forty five thousand employees are working as passenger’s screeners in more than four hundred airports around the country. â€Å"Our top priority is the safety of the traveling public, and TSA constantly strives to explore and implement new technologies that enhance security and strengthen privacy protections for the traveling public†. (â€Å"TSA Takes Next Steps to Further Enhance Passenger Privacy.†) Though airport security was enforced, there was another incident. On Christmas December 25,2009, a twenty-three year old Nigerian named Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab attempted to detonate explosives aboard a Northwest Airlines flight traveling from Amsterdam to Detroit, Michigan. Abdulmutallab had hidden plastic explosives in his underwear, which had gone undetected during the passenger screening process. Abdulmutallab had also been identified as having connection to the terrorist organization Al-Qaeda less than two months before the attempted bombing, and his own father had contacted the American embassy in Nigeria to warn them of his son’s extremist beliefs. The only reason the bombing  Failed was because abdulmutallab did not properly activate the device, and other passengers aboard the plane subdued him. Two weeks after that incident Obama administration mandated extra scrutiny- including full body pat downs- for people flying into the United States from 14 mostly Muslim countries. Under the new rules, all citizens of Afghanistan, Algeria, Lebanon, Libya, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Somalia and Yemen must receive a pat down and an extra check of their carry-on bags before boarding a plane bound for the united states, officials said. Citizens of Cuba, Iran, Sudan and Syria- nations considered â€Å"state sponsors of terrorism† (â€Å"Airport Security† January 6,2010). Airlines are still responsible for checking passenger information against government-issued watch lists intended to flag potentially dangerous travelers. Two of the lists are often referred to as the â€Å"No-Fly† (â€Å"Airport Security† January 6,2010) list, are the â€Å"Terrorist Watch List†, (â€Å"Airport Security† January 6,2010) and travelers appearing on these lists are subject to more detailed search or in the case of the â€Å"No Fly† list, are denied the ability to travel. We should appreciate that the airport security is making our trip safe and secure. Any inconvenience people feel is unimportant compared with saving lives by preventing terrorist attacks.

Native Peoples in Canada Today -- Cultural Expression :: Essays Papers

Native Peoples in Canada Today -- Cultural Expression Greater political influence and Canada's official policy of multiculturalism have both contributed to a dramatic increase in the cultural activity of Native Canadians in the latter part of the twentieth century. Government sponsorship of the arts, with, in particular, its tendency to support the work of those from "ethnic minorities", has granted a degree of public exposure to artists who would otherwise have had great difficulty in getting it. This page only discusses First Nations literature written in English, although there is plenty going on in the other arts, and in Native languages. Natives who write in English and who are published by a mainstream publisher are inevitably participating in the public sphere of the settler culture, and this fact produces all kinds of interesting tensions in their work, because they are very often trying to recover some sort of sense of indigineity, trying to re-establish connections with traditional cultures whose remoteness or tenuousness is a function of the dominant culture with which they are engaging. The best of the writers recognise this as an inescapably problematic situation, and seek to use the contradiction as a source of creative energy. One of the commonest ways of exploring this is the attempt to bring traditional oral story telling features into the written literary format. This can be done through the inclusion of aural effects such as repetition, or through the inclus ion of traditional characters. One of the problems which Western critics and readers face when confronted by Native literature is that there is a danger when it comes to the application of Western norms of interpretation and evaluation. Native texts can often work in unfamiliar ways and serve unfamiliar purposes. Thus, a reader who is expecting a narrative progression and climax from a piece of prose may well be disappointed. What Native writers are very often trying to achieve with their writing is a kind of pictorial representation of a community, without the privileging of particular characters or events. These stories can often be interpreted more readily as an embodiment of Native values and cultural codes.

Misrepresentation of Canadian First Nations People

One can argue that the 2010 Olympics committee has edited and re-packaged native culture — which has also been ripped out of its traditional contexts. The Committee is highlighting Arctic indigenous imagery — yet Vancouver, the centre of the Games, is a temperate city. Arctic indigenous peoples did not live there — or on the nearby Whistler and Cypress mountains, where some Olympic events will be held. Other BC First Nations tribes who did live in that area of British Columbia also were not represented in the marketing iconography. One First Nations man who was asked to be a participant in the 2010 opening ceremonies, was told when he came to the fitting room in his own traditional regalia, to put them aside and instead done some sort of costume, â€Å"like you see the king and the queen have in Europe – those big long robes that drag on the floor.† It was not remotely authentic at the least. This misrepresentation of the First Nations people doesn’t show the world â€Å"who [they] really are as First Nations people.† When I watched the Olympics opening ceremonies on February 12th 2010, after the original broadcast I felt proud of my country for finally including and celebrating Native peoples in the production. I was also happy that it is the first time that First Nations have been recognized by the International Olympic Committee as official host partners in any games. Take a minute and try to understand the Indigenous plight. This is not something that is so far in the past it has no effect today. It has a very strong effect. Colonization and residential schools has influenced my friend’s father's suicide and has in turn affected her entire life. The pain is still present, it is still here. I would ask that you just listen, and ponder, and learn the real Native history that has been hidden from all of us.
